Make Your Own Capybara — From Scratch
There’s something deeply satisfying about making a cute thing with your own hands. And when that cute thing is a pair of round, mochi-shaped capybaras? Even better.
The Hamanaka Needle Felt Kit “Mofumofu Village — Kokkori Daifuku Kapi & Little Ringo” (H441-642) is a Japanese craft kit that lets you create two capybara mascots and two tiny red apples using needle felting. It’s part of Hamanaka’s “Mofumofu Village” (もふもふビレッジ) series — a line of beginner-friendly needle felt kits featuring adorable animal designs.

What You’ll Make
From one kit, you get the materials to create four pieces:
- 1 large capybara — approx. 3 inches (7.5 cm) tall, the “Kokkori Daifuku Kapi” (a relaxed, daifuku mochi-shaped capybara)
- 1 small capybara — approx. 2.4 inches (6 cm) tall, a mini companion
- 2 “Little Ringo” apples — approx. 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, bright red felt apples
The finished capybaras have a wonderfully round, almost dumpling-like shape — soft caramel-colored bodies with small brown ears and nose, and tiny black bead eyes. They look like something between a real capybara and a freshly steamed mochi.
What’s Included — And What’s Not
In the kit:
- Aclaine fiber (Hamanaka’s proprietary acrylic needle felting material)
- Eye parts and nose parts
- Recipe (step-by-step instructions)
CAUTION
Important: Felting needles and mat are NOT included. You’ll need a felting needle (Hamanaka H441-023) and a felting mat (Hamanaka H441-015), or the Aclaine Starter Set (H441-047) which bundles both. You’ll also need scissors and craft glue. These are standard needle felting tools — if you’ve done any felting before, you likely already have them. If this is your first project, the starter set is a good investment since it covers multiple kits.
The kit is rated ★★☆ (Easy) on Hamanaka’s difficulty scale, making it a solid choice for beginners who are new to needle felting.
Note: This kit is designed for ages 15 and up, as felting needles have sharp tips that require careful handling.
What Is Needle Felting?
Needle felting is a craft technique where you use a barbed needle to repeatedly poke loose fiber until it compacts into a solid shape. No sewing machine, no thread, no glue for the main structure — just a needle, fiber, and patience. It’s popular in Japan as a relaxing, meditative craft, and the results can be surprisingly detailed for something made entirely by poking.
Hamanaka’s Aclaine is their proprietary acrylic fiber designed specifically for needle felting. It’s a clean, easy-to-handle alternative to traditional wool roving, and it felts quickly — meaning less poking to get a firm shape.
