What Are Sylvanian Families?
If you’re new to the world of Sylvanian Families — they’re a line of collectible animal figures and playsets created by EPOCH in Japan, first released in 1985. The concept is built around the theme of “Nature, Family, and Love”: adorable animal families living in a lush green village.
Since then, Sylvanian Families have been sold in over 70 countries and regions with more than 100 million figures worldwide. They won the British Toy of the Year award three years in a row (1987–1989). In North America, they’re known as “Calico Critters” — same figures, different branding.
With around 700 unique figures (and about 1,400 variations), Sylvanian Families have built a strong collector community. Rare sets can fetch $300–400 on the secondary market. (Wikipedia)
Meet the Snowball Family
The set contains five Shimaenaga figures — two parents and three babies. Each one has that signature round, fluffy white Shimaenaga body with tiny black eyes. Here’s a look at each family member:
- Klaus (Father): Wearing a gray jacket and a red beret, with binoculars hanging around his neck — looks like he’s ready for some birdwatching of his own!
- Nora (Mother): Dressed in a red floral skirt with a white cape and a red hat. A classic, elegant look.
- Chirpy (Baby): In a pink outfit.
- Dana (Baby): In a blue outfit.
- Nina (Baby): In a yellow outfit.
The packaging itself is charming — the background illustration shows a forest scene with lavender-like purple flowers, giving the family a natural, countryside setting that fits the Sylvanian world perfectly. The box is labeled “シマエナガファミリー” (Shimaenaga Family) and is marked for ages 3 and up.
What Is a Shimaenaga?
The Shimaenaga is a small bird found in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. Known for its round, fluffy white body during winter, it has earned the nickname “Snow Fairy” (雪の妖精) in Japanese. Its adorable appearance has made it one of the most popular animal motifs in Japanese merchandise.
Price: A Pleasant Surprise
Here’s the good news — this set is more affordable than you might expect for a Japan-exclusive Sylvanian item.
On eBay US, we found it listed at US $53.99, shipped directly from Japan. Not bad at all for a set that’s hard to find outside Japan.
A word of caution: we spotted other listings for the exact same set priced at over $300. Always compare multiple sellers on eBay before buying — prices for the same item can vary dramatically.
