What is Kutani Ware?

Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a style of Japanese pottery produced in the southern part of Ishikawa Prefecture. It dates back to 1655, when a feudal lord sent a potter to study ceramics in Arita — the birthplace of Japanese porcelain.

What makes Kutani ware special is its bold use of five overglaze colors: blue, green, yellow, purple, and red — known as Gosai (五彩). This vivid, painterly style earned Kutani ware international fame at the 1873 Vienna World Exposition, and it was designated as a Traditional Craft of Japan in 1975.

There’s even a mystery: the original Kutani kilns were suddenly abandoned around 1700, and no one knows exactly why. About a century later, new kilns revived the tradition, creating what is known today as “Saiko-Kutani” (revival Kutani).

About This Mug

This mug is sold by Kutani Iwataya, a shop in Nomi City, Ishikawa Prefecture that has specialized in Kutani ware since 1977.

The design features two Shimaenaga birds perched together on a branch, surrounded by small flower motifs in blue and yellow. The mug has a warm, rustic feel with a speckled glaze and dark brown accents around the rim and handle. You can see the Kutani tradition’s characteristic colors woven into this charming, approachable design.

What is a Shimaenaga?

If you’re new here — the Shimaenaga (Aegithalos caudatus japonicus) is a subspecies of the Long-tailed Tit found only in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. With its pure white face, round fluffy body, and tiny black beak, it has earned the nickname “Snow Fairy” (雪の妖精). The Ainu people of Hokkaido called it upas-cir, meaning “snow bird.”

In Japan, Shimaenaga merchandise has become enormously popular, with major retailers like Nitori and CanDo launching dedicated product lines. Learn more about this adorable bird at Wild Bloo or BirdLife International.
